The Cypress Chargers women's soccer team scored six goals in the first half against the Rustlers of Golden West on Oct. 27 at Cypress College. For sportsmanship purposes the Chargers intentionally extended their possessions and still scored an additional seven goals in the second half.
Both teams started off slow but the Chargers were running like a well-oiled machine. Charger sophomore Alana Wohlers #5 scored the first goal of the game when Charger sophomore Ariana Olague #12 sent a pass into the box and Charger freshman Nicole Weil #8 redirected the ball to Wohlers.
A few minutes later, Charger sophomore Casey Kiehl #3 sent a corner kick into the goal box and Wohler headed the ball toward the net. A Rustler defendant attempted to clear the ball but instead knocked it in for Wohlers second goal of the game.
Charger sophomore Amber Lopez #20 sent a pass into the box. Kiehl received the pass and drove the ball around several Rustler defenders and kicked the ball just inside the near post for the third goal of the game.
The fourth Charger goal was scored when a Rustler defender kicked the ball backward to the Rustler goalkeeper. Charger freshman Lindsey Ault #19 stole the pass and walked the ball into the net for a rare uncontested goal.
Weil scored her first goal of the game off an assist from Charger freshman Jessica Murphy #11. Murphy scored a goal off an assist from Charger Vanessa Corona #22.
Halftime gave the Rustlers time to catch their breath. Charger sophomore Starr Gonzales #23 took over goalkeeping responsibilities from Charger freshman goalkeeper Chelsea Broghamer #1.
At the beginning of the second half, Kiehl scored her second goal when she stole the ball from a Rustler defender and kicked the ball past the goalkeeper unassisted.
Weil scored her second goal off an assist from Corona, Weil returned the favor by assisting Corona on the next goal.
Corona collected her third assist of the match when she sent a hard cross that deflected off the Rustler goalkeeper. The ball bounced between two Chargers and right into the path of Charger sophomore Sasha Key #17. Key was the one who put the ball into the net.
Corona executed the give-n-go to perfection when she sent a pass to Ault and then took off running down the left side. Ault returned a quick touch pass and Corona drove toward the goal and kicked the ball into the net for her second goal of the game.
Charger freshman Michelle Hampton #21 repeatedly drove the ball down the left side and sent several cross passes into the box. Wohlers knocked one of those cross passes down and kicked the ball into the net to complete the hat-trick.
The last goal was scored when Hampton collected her second assist and sent another cross into the box and Ault flipped the ball over the reach of the Rustler goalkeeper.
Obviously, this game was an opportunity to showcase the offensive power of the Chargers but the Charger defense deserves a mention. Charger sophomore Amanda LoBello #6, Charger freshman ChristiAna Lang #16, Olague and several other Charger defenders successfully coiled all offensive attacks by the Rustlers.
Charger freshman Hina Lilii #15 was notably missing from the defense. Sources indicate she was being rested and will be back in action next Tuesday.
Charger sophomores Carey Wathen #4 and Juliane Adams #9 are both scheduled for ACL surgery and are unavailable for the remainder of this season. Their offensive contributions will be missed.
