CYPRESS, Calif.---Monday, May 19, 2008

The Cypress College Associated Students held a special run-off election May 7 and 8 in answer to a dispute raised regarding campaign violations. The two candidates, Jeanette Vasquez and Gustavo Delgado, vied for president in the April A.S. elections. Vasquez netted 151 votes [ currently, A.S. requires a majority of all votes cast to win any office. Vasquez needed at least 141]. Delgado issued a challenge, because a supporter of Vasquez ( reportedly her boyfriend ) had worn a campaign T-Shirt within the 100-foot polling-zone, which is against A.S. election code rules.

Vasquez' campaign posters featured a drawing of cartoon character Lisa Simpson, urging voters to elect one woman for president. Though it appears Hillary Clinton has been stymied for this year, Vasquez has not: The final tally of the run-off shows the result was the same as before: Jeanette Vasquez is the winner!

Delgado will still have plenty to do this coming year; he was elected Senator at Large of the Student Senate of California Community Colleges on May 4. His current position in A.S. is Student Advocate. As an appointee, he would not have a vote within the senate, so he must be elected. Delgado plans to run in the Fall 2008 A.S. elections.
