Emily Gehrman, a Cypress College tutor coordinator in the Library Learning Resource Center, received a ticket Feb. 25 at Cypress College for parking out of the stall.

Gehrman received a $25 parking ticket for parking out of the stall.

"When I picked up the ticket, I saw a box checked 'parked out of stall'. I didn't quite understand at first, but then after examining the 'helpful' drawing on the ticket, I realized that I got a ticket for going over the line of the space," said Gehrman.

Luis Miguel Munoz-Najar, a third-year student at Cypress, is always at school and rarely receives a parking ticket.

"I think it's pretty stupid, but rules are rules. What the world forgets is that people live life with imperfections and do not have time to park correctly in stalls," said Najar.

According to Karen Cant, the interim vice president of educational support and planning, nothing about this incident is new.

Parking tickets are given to students who do not park correctly in stalls.

This includes parking backwards, in a red zone, with no permit or an expired permit, in an expired time zone and many more.

Offenders are fined a minimum of $25 and a maximum of $275 depending on the severity of the parking violation.

"I understand that I didn't park perfectly, but is that really worth charging me $25?" asked Gehrman. "Perhaps the parking enforcement squad is out on the offensive due to budget cuts. I really don't know."

Cant said nothing has changed regarding the new proposal of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's budget cut.

"To prevent getting a ticket, have a parking permit and hang it and follow the display instructions," Cant said.

"If not deserving, you can appeal a ticket, but that does not mean your ticket will get waived," Cant said.

Students who want to appeal a ticket can find an appeal form at the Campus Safety Department or on the Cypress College website.

Gehrman hopes students will learn from her example.

"Park perfectly on campus or you'll be fitting the bill for campus expenses," she said.
