Charger Hugo Trejo #17 heads a throw-in for the Chargers second goal

Crucial mistakes lead to a Cypress College men's soccer team 4-2 loss to the Orange Coast Pirates, Friday Oct. 2. The Chargers began conference play with a tie but hoped to rebound against the Pirates who were victorious in their first conference game. The game was off to a quick start with a goal from each side in the first 20 minutes. However, the remainder of the first half seemed to show the game would be dominated by defense. The half was evenly possessed by both teams thanks to various misconnected passes on both sides of the ball.
This was not the case in the second half. The Pirates took advantage of a flat and unfocused Chargers squad. Orange Coast freshman midfielder, William Munoz, snuck behind the napping Chargers defense and capitalized on an offensive rebound just seven minutes into the second half. Munoz would strike again five minutes later on yet another rebound, this time on a goalkeeper mistake by freshman, John Serna, and the Pirates never looked back.
Serna discussed the persistence of the Pirates offense, "They did what they had to do, I would tell my team to do the same thing and crash the net on any shot on goal.
A goalkeeper change, with 35 minutes left in the game, would briefly help boost the Chargers hopes as freshman midfielder, Jugo Trejo, scored in a breakaway bringing the chargers within one point. Cypress play began to get sloppy as foul-after-foul allowed time to tick away without much of a Charger threat. With just 20 minutes left the Chargers pushed hard for a final few attacks but left themselves open to various quick counter attacks by the Pirates. With just 10 minutes left the Pirates put the game away on a goal by freshman forward, Bryan Arguello.
We caught up with head coach, Ed Kephart, who shared his thoughts after the game, "The second half we had two mental mistakes, we have been talking about that all year long…two small mistakes, two goals."
Trejo shared his thoughts on the first 10 minutes of the second half, "We came out thinking we were going to win, and we gave up two quick goals. It took us a while to get our rhythm back up, it obviously didn't help."
The Chargers will travel to Golden West College on Tuesday, Oct. 6 in search of their first conference victory. They return home Friday, Oct. 9 to host Riverside at 3 p.m.
