On Sept; 8th at Cypress College, the Chargers' womans soccer team played their home opener and second game of the season against the Panthers of Chaffey College. The Chargers were on the attack most of the game and their defense was rarely tested.
During the first half, Charger forward Juliane Adams #9 was fouled just outside the penalty box while driving the ball down the left side of the field. Charger midfielder Sasha Key kicked the perfect foul shot into the sweet spot in the middle of the goalie box. Charger midfielder Nicole Weil #8 headed the ball toward the far post for the Chargers first goal of the game.
The game was very physical and several players repeatedly picked themselves up off the ground after giving or receiving a slide tackle. Charger defender ChristiAna Lang #16 was kneed in the side by a Panther player. She left the game briefly.
The score remained 0-1 at halftime and the Charger team gathered together at midfield with their coaches. Although it was a warm September afternoon, they did not enjoy any shade during the break.
When the second half began, the Chargers picked up where they left off in the first half. They attacked the Panther's goal often. Eventually during one of their attacks, Charger midfielder Jessica Murphy #11 passed the ball back above the penalty box and Charger midfielder Casey Kiehl #3 sent a blistering shot past the Panther goalie. The Chargers took a 0-2 lead.
Late in the game, the Panther offense broke through the Charger defense and earned a corner kick. When the corner kick was sent into the goalie box, Charger goalie Chelsea Broghamer #1 gathered up the ball among a crowd of players. Several players went to the ground including the goalie but she never let go of the ball and provided her team an impressive save. The game ended 0-2 in favor of the Chargers. They earned their second victory in as many games.
After the game, Charger player ChristiAna Lang said, "We have a lot to work on. I'm excited to see what our next games brings." Charger goalie Chelsea Broghamer added, "I thought we did a really good job, we possessed the ball real well but we need to finish more and put it in the net." Charger assistant coach Randi Martinez said, "This team is capable of getting it done. We just gotta find our consistent 11 and we'll go from there."
The Chargers flew to Northern California on Sept; 10th to play 3 away games within 4 days. They won all 3 road games by outscoring their opponents 11-1 and returned
home with a 5-0 record for the season. Their next home game was last Friday, September 18th Please read the upcoming article to find out if they continued their winning streak.
