The Chargers treasure their 4-0 shutout win against the Pirates of Orange Coast played at Cypress on Tuesday, September 22. The home game was the Chargers second conference victory in as many games and improves their season record to 7-0-0.
The two highly capable teams moved the ball up and down the field constantly testing each other's defense. The game remained scoreless until the 37 minute of the first half. During one of many crosses sent from the right corner by Charger midfielder Jessica Murphy #11, Charger forward Angie Silva #18, collected the cross pass and sent a perfect lead pass to Charger midfielder Lindsey Ault #19, who kicked the ball like a cannon into the net for the Chargers first score of the game.
During halftime, the Chargers moved an easy-up awning to midfield to provide shade for the players on a hot September afternoon.
Early in the second half, the Chargers mounted an attack when Charger midfielder Amber Lopez #20 advanced the ball to Charger forward/midfielder Juliane Adams #9. Adams initiated a give-n-go with Charger midfielder Alana Wohlers #5. Wohlers returned the pass to Adams completing the give-n-go allowing Adams to send a one-touch pass to unmarked Charger midfielder Casey Kiehl #3. Before the defender could close in, Kiehl sent the ball into the net for the Charger's second goal of the game.
In the twenty second minute of the second half, Murphy gathered up the ball and passed to wide-open Charger forward Vanessa Corona #22. Corona carried the ball closer to the goal and sent a shot that ricocheted off a defender's foot and then off the goalkeeper's hands into the net for the Charger's third goal of the game.
In the final minute of the game, Charger midfielder/forward Ariana Olague #12 sent a long pass in front of the opponent's goal. The Pirate's goalkeeper and Charger forward Starr Gonzales wearing #14, raced and got her foot on the ball sending a slow roller toward the goal. The goalkeeper was on the ground as the ball rolled into the net for the Charger's fourth and final goal of the game.
During the postgame interviews, Charger goalkeeper/forward Starr Gonzales said, "The team played great, the team played really good. I love the way we're playing." Charger midfielder/defender Amanda LoBello said, "The team played very well today, I'm very proud of them." Charger goalkeeper Chelsea Broghamer added, "I think we played very well. We came together as a team, played with high energy and communication."
