Peter Mathews' congressional campaign held an anit-war rally Thursday March 20.

The rally was held in Recreation Park in Long Beach at 5 o'clock.

15 protestors participated in the rallyin support of ending the war in Iraq and getting Peter Mathews elected to the House of Representatives.

Beginning July 1, 2008, California motorists are now required to use hands-free cellular phone devices when operating a vehicle.

The new law is designed to keep drivers' attention on the road and not on their cell phones.

Honors Students Attend Research Conference

UC Irvine hosted the 8th Annual Honors Student Research Conference on Saturday, March 1.

Nearly 40 Cypress College students went to the conference. Cypress College earned recognition as the school with the most attendees.

The conference exposed attendees to student research projects completed at different California community colleges from as far back as last semester.

Student-produced Sole Image Magazine gives students a chance to express themselves through visual and word art.

Any student can turn in photos, poems, short stories, sketches or more. Submissions for this semester are now closed, said Sole Image adviser Lawrence Keel.

Cypress College Offers Mortuary Science

The Mortuary Science is offered at Cypress College for students interested in the Mortuary Science field for spring and fall semesters in the Tech Ed Building 3.

Glenn A. Bower, the Director of the Mortuary Science Program at Cypress, said, "We offer students the opportunity to enter the Funeral Service profession.

State Budget Cut $31 Million

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger issued a proposal for a $40 million budget cut. Legislature lowered the cut to $31 million after some debate.

"Anything government-supported can potentially be affected," said Karen Cant, Interim Vice President of Educational Support and Planning.

Coffee Chains Eating Up Students' Change

To many college students, coffee is the nectar of the gods. This evidence can be backed up by the long lines in the snack store between classes, and some varieties of coffee on campus being sold out at times.

Adjacent to the campus, there are several businesses catering to caffeine-craving students, including Starbucks, It's a Grind, and Phat Straw.

Student Fined for Crossing Line

Emily Gehrman, a Cypress College tutor coordinator in the Library Learning Resource Center, received a ticket Feb. 25 2008 at Cypress College for parking out of the stall.

Gehrman received a $25 dollar parking ticket for parking out of the stall. "When I picked up the ticket, I saw a box checked 'parked out of stall'.

Campus Will Hold Women's Day of Expression

Regina Rhymes, a staff member in the Sociology Department, plans for the "Women's Day of Expression" event March 27 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Theater Lobby.

This campus event happens annually to honor women's history month.

"This event is a lot of fun- bringing women on the campus- staff, faculty, students & community members together to celebrate women's history," said Mary Forman, adviser of the UTAP program at Cypress.

UTAP Goes Hiking

University Transfer Achievement Program (UTAP) students and faculty adviser Mary Forman hiked in Palos Verdes on Thursday, Feb. 28.

First year student Lina Audish said she enjoyed the field trip. "The coolest thing was that the area was extremely beautiful and it was so close to home.

Students Appreciate Black History Through Dance

In celebration of Black History month, Cypress College dance classes and students from The Academy of Performing Arts High School performed "Dancing through History," Thursday Feb. 21 in the campus theater to an audience of over 100 people.

The mini-concert consisted of nine different styles of dances that have originated or have been influenced by African culture throughout history.

David Healey Captures the Forgotten

David Healey, a 64 year old Professional Photographer born in Massachusetts, displayed a variety of photographs he had captured over the years on Thursday Mar. 6, 2008 at the opening of the Cypress College Photo Gallery in the Technical II Building.

Healey's photography career started in 1968 a couple of months before he was drafted into the Vietnam War.

People in Motion Enters Stage Left

This year's Spring Dance Performance, "People in Motion," is set to hit the stage May 9th and 10th.

Holly Lampe will be directing this annual performance, with the assistance of her student director Erin Landry. Lampe believes that the amount of pieces as well as the number of students that auditioned is proof that "the [dance] program is vital and alive.

Chargers Win Final Game of OEC Mini Tournament

The Cypress Chargers finish the OEC Mini Tournament strong with a 8-1 win over Saddleback.

The Chargers didn't have a difficult time Saturday, after suffering a first round defeat, and surving the second round that was decided by four lead changes.

Cypress took control early as they scored seven runs in the second inning.

Former Charger, Garett Green, who played with the Chargers from 2005 to 2006, was named College Baseball Insider.com's National Player of the Week.
