Doug Bailey, Mayor of Cypress, recognized the state of California's economic crisis and applauded the the community for pulling together in difficult times in 2008 during the State of the City Address luncheon on Wednesday, Jan. 28, at the community center.

Bailey said the freezing credit markets and bankruptcies didn't change Cypress' economic structure, and the city continues to thrive after the near bankruptcies of our largest financial institutions.

"And after all that (referring to the year 2008), the City of Cypress continues to be fiscally sound," Bailey said. "Under the leadership of our long-time Assistant City Manager and Finance Director, Mr. Richard Storey, the city's fiscal practice has always been one of taking a proactive approach to cutting operating expenditures in order to stay in line with projected revenues."

Bailey said it was truly an honor to stand before the community and look at the progress. "Progress is a team effort. Our businesses have placed Cypress on the map as the crown jewel in Northwest Orange County as a city of golden opportunities and progress."

Educators, volunteers and community members were also identified as part of the team. "To our partners in education, I thank and acknowledge the Board of Trustees, administrators, teachers, and staff of the Cypress School District and the Anaheim Union High School District," Bailey said.

Bailey continued to emphasize that hard work and dedication to the quality of education for our children is a contributor to the city's progress and acknowledge Dr. Michael Kasler, President of Cypress College, and his team for the ongoing leadership in the community.

Kasler said he was happy to have Cypress College in the city. "The positive rapport with the city is something I don't think many cities have. This was a very positive uplifting event."

Bailey continued and said that Kasler, who just completed his first academic year as President of Cypress College, achieved a great deal of success through an increased enrollment, impressive growth in the area of grants and the opening of the new Student Center and Bookstore.

Even though 2008 was a year of many accomplishments, Bailey said he is optimistic that in the year 2009 he will see even further progress.

For example, Bailey said the Business Retention, Attraction, Creation and Expansion (BRACE) program promises to provide local business leaders with a wide array of quality speakers and educational topics through informative quarterly meetings. The Cypress Economic Development Team is pursuing new business, there will be new improvements for city streets, planting of trees, improving the drainage area along Myra Avenue, sewer improvements and construction of a new Orange County Fire Authority Station.

"The city of Cypress is a unique city in which the city government and community leaders work cooperatively together to create a city that is known for its high quality of life and it is an honor to be a part of the cypress family," said Andrew J. Tse, Cypress Administrative Services Manager.
